A 6.1 magnitude earthquake struck Taiwan's eastern coast early Friday morning, according to the US Geological Survey (USGS). No immediate reports of damage were received.

The USGS reported that the earthquake occurred at 07:35 AM local time (23:35 GMT) at a depth of 15.4 kilometers in the Pacific Ocean, near the coastal city of Hualien.

Taiwan's Central Weather Bureau estimated the earthquake's magnitude at 6.3 and placed its depth at 9.7 kilometers. The bureau sent mobile alerts urging residents to "remain calm and seek safe shelter."

In a statement released by the fire department at 08:00 AM local time (midnight GMT), it confirmed that no reports of damage had been received following the quake.

Taiwan experiences frequent earthquakes due to its location between two tectonic plates. The last significant earthquake occurred in early April, with a magnitude of 7.4, the strongest in the country in 25 years. That quake resulted in at least 17 fatalities, landslides, and substantial damage to buildings near its epicenter in Hualien.
